What is Rath Yatra?

Rath Yatra — the Chariot Festival of Lord Jagannath — is one of the oldest and largest religious gatherings on Earth, drawing millions of devotees to the Grand Road (Bada Danda) of Puri every year. Three magnificent wooden chariots carry Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra on their annual 3-km journey to the Gundicha Temple. What makes it unique: this is the one day when the deities emerge from the inner sanctum and every person — regardless of caste, religion, or nationality — can receive their darshan on the streets.

In 2026, Rath Yatra falls on Thursday, 16 July, with the main chariot procession taking place on July 16. The return journey, Bahuda Yatra, follows on 24 July 2026.
