Self Drive Car in Bhubaneswar During Monsoon 2026 — Tips, Best Roads & Cars to Pick

Published: 13 May 2026

Written by the Drigo Editorial Team — Drigo's local fleet operations team in Bhubaneswar.

We operate self drive cars in Bhubaneswar, Puri and the Chilika belt year-round — including through the June–September monsoon. The tips below come from hundreds of rainy-season trips our customers have taken, and the questions our hosts field every July on WhatsApp.

Last reviewed: May 2026 · Verified with Drigo hosts across Bhubaneswar and Puri.

The monsoon reaches Bhubaneswar around the second week of June and lingers through late September. Most visitors assume this is the wrong time to rent a self drive car. They are wrong. The Puri beach in light morning rain, Chilika Lake reflecting dark monsoon clouds, the Konark temple road lined with cashew and mango trees dripping green — these are sights that summer tourists never see.

That said, monsoon driving in Odisha does require specific preparation. The right car, the right roads, the right precautions. This guide covers all three, written specifically for anyone renting a self drive car in Bhubaneswar between June and September 2026.

Is It Safe to Drive a Self Drive Car in Bhubaneswar During Monsoon?

Yes — with the right car and basic caution. Bhubaneswar's main roads (NH 16, NH 316, NH 57) are well-maintained four-lane or six-lane highways that drain quickly. The city itself rarely sees the flash flooding that coastal areas do. The stretches that require care are:

  • Low-lying underpasses in Bhubaneswar city (Vani Vihar, Master Canteen junction) — these can waterlog in heavy rain. Avoid them at night during downpours; take Janpath or Sachivalaya Marg instead.
  • Puri beach road and marine parade — sand washes onto the road after cyclonic winds. Drive slowly.
  • Chilika lake-side roads near Rambha and Barkul — scenic but narrow with soft shoulders. Ideal in light rain, risky in heavy.
  • Konark–Puri coastal highway (SH 15) — beautiful in monsoon but prone to fallen casuarina trees after storms. Check for alerts before you go.

The golden rule: don't drive in active cyclone warnings. The Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) publishes real-time alerts at odisha.gov.in. If there's a yellow, orange or red alert for your district, postpone.

Best Car for Monsoon Self Drive in Bhubaneswar — Honest Breakdown

This is the question we get every June. Here's what actually matters in wet Odisha conditions: ground clearance, tyre condition, and visibility. Not pure power.

Mahindra Thar (₹5,000/day) — The All-Weather King

226 mm ground clearance, 4x4 with low range, diesel engine with strong torque, and the body-on-frame construction that handles waterlogged village roads near Chilika effortlessly. This is the car we recommend if your trip includes any of the following: Satapada (the dolphin point), the Rambha–Barkul backwater roads, Deras Forest Reserve, or any off-tarmac detour to Odisha's temple clusters.

Limitation: 4-seater only. Not ideal for families of 5+.

Hyundai Creta (₹4,500/day) — Best All-Round Monsoon Car

190 mm ground clearance, modern ABS with EBD, excellent forward visibility, and a diesel engine that returns 17–19 km/l even in monsoon traffic. The Creta handles Bhubaneswar–Puri–Konark loops effortlessly in rain. It is our most-booked car during the rainy season and for good reason — it's the perfect balance of safety, comfort and fuel economy.

Best for: Couples, families of 4, NH 16 highway runs, Puri day trips.

Mahindra Scorpio N (₹5,500/day) — Best for Groups

210 mm ground clearance, 7 seats, diesel torque, and proper SUV bones. If you're 5–7 people heading to Puri or Chilika in the rain, the Scorpio N is the answer. Comfortable on long highway stretches, stable in crosswinds that the Odisha coast can throw at you.

Maruti Grand Vitara (₹4,000/day) — Hidden Monsoon Gem

180 mm clearance and excellent wet-road grip from its Yokohama OE tyres. The mild-hybrid powertrain is quiet and efficient. Ideal for Bhubaneswar city errands, Nandankanan Zoological Park, and short Puri runs where you want comfort without SUV prices.

Hatchbacks in Monsoon — Use With Caution

The Maruti Swift and Dzire (165–170 mm ground clearance) are city-oriented cars. They are fine for dry Bhubaneswar city driving but we advise against taking them to Chilika lake roads, Konark beach-side lanes, or any route where you might encounter waterlogging. If your monsoon trip is purely Bhubaneswar city (hospital runs, Infocity area, Ekamra Haat), a Swift is perfectly adequate and saves you money.

Best Monsoon Roads from Bhubaneswar — Where to Drive and Where to Be Careful

Bhubaneswar to Puri (60 km via NH 316) — Green Flag

This is Odisha's safest and most rewarding monsoon drive. NH 316 is a broad, well-maintained four-lane road that drains fast. The rice paddies on both sides turn vivid emerald in July–August. The drive takes 75–90 minutes in moderate rain. Puri beach in the morning drizzle, with far fewer tourists than summer, is one of the best experiences in Eastern India.

Watch for: The stretch between Pipili and Puri can have moderate traffic during weekends. Start by 8 AM to reach Puri by 9:30 AM before the rain peaks.

Puri to Konark (35 km via SH 15) — Green Flag with Caution

The Konark Marine Drive is dramatic in monsoon — dark clouds over the Bay of Bengal, waves crashing at Chandrabhaga beach, the Sun Temple standing against grey skies. The road is narrow in places (single lane near Ramchandi temple) and casuarina trees can drop branches in strong winds. Avoid this stretch after 6 PM and in active warnings.

Bhubaneswar to Chilika Lake — Satapada Route (160 km) — Green Flag

Take NH 316 to Puri, then Puri–Satapada road via Brahmagiri. This road narrows significantly after Brahmagiri. The Satapada–Chilika dolphin boat ride is operational even in light monsoon. Book the Odisha Tourism boat in advance. The Satapada road has soft shoulders — stay on tarmac.

Bhubaneswar to Chilika — Barkul/Rambha Route (120 km via NH 316) — Yellow Flag

Barkul and Rambha are on the western shore of Chilika. The road from Bhubaneswar passes Khordha, then follows the lake edge. Scenic but narrow with speed bumps and the occasional flooded patch. Take the Creta or Thar; avoid hatchbacks. Best done on a day without active orange/red alerts.

Bhubaneswar to Dhauli (8 km) — Green Flag

Perfect monsoon half-day. The Dhauli Peace Pagoda and Ashokan Rock Edicts are close to the city, the road is good, and the green hillside in rain is beautiful. Combine with Lingaraj Temple (a short drive back) for a meaningful morning.

Routes to Avoid in Heavy Rain

  • Bhubaneswar to Gopalpur beach — long (220 km) with stretches through low-lying coastal areas prone to flooding in cyclonic rain.
  • Bhubaneswar to Daringbadi (Odisha's Kashmir) — the ghat sections on NH 59 after Phulbani turn treacherous in heavy rain. Better post-monsoon (October).
  • Any route in active cyclone warning zones — non-negotiable. Park the car and wait it out.

12 Monsoon Driving Precautions for Self Drive Car Renters in Odisha

  1. Check the Odisha IMD forecast every morning. Bookmark mausam.imd.gov.in. If a red warning is up for your district, do not drive outstation.
  2. Never enter waterlogged roads. If you can't see the road surface, turn around. The water may be 3 feet deep. One wrong move can ruin the engine.
  3. Keep your headlights on at all times in rain — it's the law and it genuinely helps visibility.
  4. Increase following distance to 4–5 seconds (from the normal 2–3). Wet roads double your stopping distance.
  5. Drive slowly through puddles — even shallow ones. Water entry can cause aquaplaning or engine hydro-lock in low-clearance cars.
  6. Check tyres before you start. Our hosts inspect tyre tread before every trip, but do a visual check yourself. Bald tyres on wet Odisha tarmac are dangerous.
  7. Keep an emergency kit in the car — torch, phone charger, small umbrella, one litre of drinking water, basic medicines. All Drigo cars have a first-aid kit and spare tyre.
  8. Don't drive through fallen power lines or trees — common after cyclonic squalls. Call the local fire station (101) or ODRAF (0674-2534177) and wait for clearance.
  9. Turn on hazard lights if you must stop on the road in poor visibility.
  10. Fuel up before leaving Bhubaneswar — petrol stations in coastal areas near Chilika can run short during extended rain.
  11. Plan to return before dark — night driving in monsoon Odisha, especially on coastal roads, is significantly riskier.
  12. Share your location with someone before leaving. WhatsApp Live Location works well on India's mobile networks along NH 316 and NH 16.

Insurance and Drigo's Policy During Monsoon Trips

Every car on the Drigo platform carries comprehensive commercial insurance that covers the vehicle during the rental period. Here is what that means for monsoon trips specifically:

What Is Covered

  • Accidental damage — including collision with fallen trees, skids on wet roads, and minor dents from road debris.
  • Third-party liability — if you are involved in an accident that damages another vehicle or injures a third party.
  • Natural calamity clause — most comprehensive policies cover damage from floods and cyclones, subject to the insurer's terms. Drigo hosts carry policies that include this clause.

What Is NOT Covered — Your Responsibility

  • Engine hydro-lock from driving through deep water — if you intentionally drive into a visibly flooded road and the engine seizes, this is driver negligence and is not covered. The repair bill for a hydro-locked diesel engine is ₹80,000–2,00,000. This is the single biggest monsoon mistake renters make.
  • Damage from driving in active cyclone warnings — if ODRAF/IMD has issued a red warning and you drive out anyway, any damage is at the renter's risk.
  • Interior damage from leaving windows open in rain — treat the car as your own. Close windows and sunroof when it rains.

Our advice: treat waterlogged roads as a hard stop. Turn around, find a dhaba or petrol station, have a cup of chai, and wait 30–45 minutes for the water to drain. Odisha's heavy rain usually passes quickly.

Important: If you are involved in any accident or incident during your rental, call your Drigo host immediately and then file a First Information Report (FIR) at the nearest police station. The FIR number is required for any insurance claim.

Frequently Asked Questions — Monsoon Self Drive in Bhubaneswar

Can I take the self drive car to Puri during monsoon?

Yes, absolutely. The Bhubaneswar–Puri route via NH 316 is one of the safest monsoon drives in Odisha. We send dozens of cars to Puri every monsoon weekend. Just avoid it during active cyclone warnings (check the IMD alert before you leave).

What happens if the car breaks down in the rain?

Call your Drigo host immediately. All hosts guarantee roadside assistance within 2–4 hours anywhere in the Bhubaneswar–Puri–Konark corridor. For mechanical breakdown through no fault of yours (flat tyre, electrical fault), the host arranges replacement or recovery at no cost to you.

Is the Chilika lake drive safe in monsoon?

The Satapada route (from Puri) and the Barkul/Rambha route are safe in light to moderate rain with a high-clearance car (Creta/Thar). Avoid them in heavy downpours or orange/red alert days. The lake itself is stunning in monsoon — dark water, low clouds, migratory birds starting to arrive in August.

Do Drigo cars have full insurance during monsoon trips?

Yes — comprehensive commercial insurance is mandatory on every Drigo car. However, engine damage from knowingly driving through flooded roads is not covered by any insurer (it's classed as driver negligence). Never enter waterlogged roads — this is the most important monsoon rule.

Is the Konark Sun Temple open during monsoon?

Yes, Konark is open year-round (6 AM–8 PM). Entry fee: ₹40 for Indian nationals, ₹600 for foreign nationals. Monsoon mornings are the best time to visit — fewer tourists and dramatic cloud backdrops. The light show (Konark Dance Festival is in December, not monsoon) does not apply, but the temple itself is accessible.

What is the best time of day to drive in monsoon Odisha?

Early morning (6–10 AM) is ideal — roads are less trafficked, rain is usually lighter, and you reach your destination before the afternoon downpour that typically peaks between 2–5 PM. Avoid driving at night in heavy rain anywhere outside city limits.
