Self Drive Cars in Ranchi for City Rides (2026): Daily Commute, Errands & Half-Day Bookings
Published: 20 April 2026
Most people think of self drive cars only for outstation trips — but in Ranchi, more than half of our city bookings are for short, in-city rides: a half-day for office + market, an evening for a family dinner, or a few hours to drop someone at IXR. Here's how it works.
Written by the Drigo Editorial Team — Drigo's local fleet operations team in Jharkhand & Odisha.
This guide is built from real Drigo bookings and the questions our team hears every day from city renters who only need a car for a few hours, a school run, an airport drop or a quick weekend errand inside the city.

Why renting a self drive car for city rides makes sense in Ranchi
Ranchi's auto-rickshaw and cab supply gets thin after 9 PM and on rainy afternoons. Surge pricing on app cabs frequently doubles your fare for short trips between Lalpur, Doranda and Hinoo. A half-day self drive booking — typically ₹1,000–1,200 — covers the same trips with no surge, no waiting, and the freedom to make extra stops.

City rides usually fit into one of these short-duration buckets. Prices include the car, basic insurance and 80–120 km depending on duration.
| Duration | Hatchback / Sedan | SUV (Creta / Grand Vitara) |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 6 hr (half day) | ₹1,000–1,200 | ₹1,500–1,700 |
| Full day (24 hr) | ₹2,000–2,200 | ₹3,000 |
| Extra hours beyond half-day | ~₹150/hr | ~₹220/hr |
Half-day bookings include 80 km. City rides almost never cross that. Fuel is on the renter; FASTag is pre-installed.
Best cars for in-city Ranchi rides
- Maruti Swift / Baleno — easiest to park near Main Road, Lalpur Chowk and Big Bazaar. Light steering for stop-go traffic.
- Maruti Dzire — the go-to for airport drops with a small family + 2 suitcases.
- Hyundai Creta / Maruti Grand Vitara — if you have parents or in-laws on board, the higher seat height makes a real difference for short city hops.
- Toyota Innova Crysta — when you're doing a wedding or family function inside the city and need 6–7 seats for 3–4 hours.
The 6 most common city-ride bookings we see in Ranchi
- Airport drop / pickup (IXR ↔ city): A half-day booking covers the round trip easily. ₹1,000–1,200 in a Dzire vs ₹600–900 one-way on a surge-priced cab — and you keep the car for any extra stops.
- Office + after-work errands: Pick the car at 9 AM, drop the kids at school, head to office in Doranda, and use the same car for the evening grocery run at Spar Hypermarket.
- Family wedding circuit: Mehndi at Argora, baraat at a hotel in Kanke, reception at Albert Ekka Chowk — three venues, one car, no driver coordination.
- Hospital visits: A regular weekly ride to RIMS or Medanta with an elderly family member. SUVs are easier to get in/out of for older relatives.
- Late-night station runs: Ranchi Junction at 2 AM, when no app cab will accept your trip. A car waiting in your driveway solves it.
- Weekend mall + dinner: Book at noon, return by midnight. One booking covers Nucleus Mall, Spar, and a dinner at Capitol Hill.
Where we deliver in Ranchi
Free home delivery anywhere inside Ranchi municipal limits — Lalpur, Doranda, Hinoo, Kanke, Bariatu, Argora, HEC, Morabadi and Ratu Road. Free pickup at Birsa Munda Airport (IXR) and Ranchi Junction. For locations beyond the Ring Road, a small delivery fee applies — we'll tell you upfront, never at handover.
Local rules to keep in mind for in-city driving
- One-way roads: Main Road (Albert Ekka Chowk to Sujata Cinema) is one-way during peak hours — Google Maps doesn't always reflect this. Follow signage.
- Parking: Paid parking at Nucleus Mall (₹30/3hr), free at most market lots. Avoid the inner lanes off Main Road — towing is active.
- School zone speeds: 25 km/h enforced near DAV Hehal and Loyola during morning hours. There are unmarked speed breakers — drive slow.
- Fuel: Cheapest petrol/diesel in the city is at the IOCL pump on Ring Road and the BPCL near Hinoo. App-based fuel apps don't work — pay by card or UPI at the pump.
Documents you'll need
Just two: your Indian driving licence (LMV class, at least 1 year old) and Aadhaar. KYC is fully digital via DigiLocker — most first-time renters finish it in under 2 minutes from their phone. We don't ask for a salary slip, employer letter, voter ID or PAN card.
Frequently asked questions
What's the shortest booking I can make for a city ride?
The minimum chargeable booking is 6 hours (half day). For shorter needs, the half-day fee is still typically cheaper than two surged cab rides.
Can I extend my booking from the road if my plans change?
Yes. Open the booking in the Drigo app, tap "Extend", and the new fare is computed instantly. Most extensions are approved in under a minute.
What if I get a traffic challan during my booking?
Challans are linked to the registered car owner but the renter is responsible for paying. We forward any e-challan to you within 48 hours of receiving it.
Is there a security deposit?
Yes — ₹3,000 for hatchbacks/sedans, up to ₹10,000 for SUVs. Refunded within 48 hours of the post-trip inspection.
Can I book a car for just an airport drop?
You can, but a half-day booking is almost always cheaper than two one-way trips. Most renters keep the car between drops.
