Dhanbad is famous as India's coal capital — but step 30 km out of the city in any direction and you'll find some of Jharkhand's most underrated drives. Maithon Dam, Topchanchi Lake, and the Jain pilgrimage centre at Parasnath are all easy day trips with the right car.

Drigo has been delivering self drive cars in Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad since 2023. The information in this guide is drawn from our own bookings, fleet performance data and the daily customer questions our team answers on call and on WhatsApp.

Why self drive works well in Dhanbad

Dhanbad is small enough that most renters use the car for trips outside the city rather than inside it. The Grand Trunk Road (NH 19) and NH 18 / NH 32 give you direct access to Maithon, Parasnath, Topchanchi and even cross-border trips into West Bengal. Coal-belt traffic can be heavy on weekday mornings — plan around it and the city is genuinely easy.

Where we deliver in Dhanbad

Free delivery to Bank More, Hirapur, Saraidhela, Jharia, Govindpur, Dhansar, and Bhuli — basically the whole DMC area. Dhanbad Junction railway station pickup is included; just share your train PNR at booking and we'll time the delivery to your arrival. There's no commercial airport in Dhanbad — most flyers come from Ranchi (IXR) or Kolkata; we offer one-way drops from both for ₹2,000–3,000 depending on car.

Three day trips Dhanbad locals do every weekend

1. Dhanbad → Maithon Dam (50 km, 90 min)

The biggest reservoir in the Damodar Valley system, sitting on the Jharkhand–West Bengal border. The drive on NH 18 + state highway is mostly open and fast. You'll cross the dam wall — vehicles are allowed on the eastern half. Boating is available 9 AM–5 PM at Maithon Boat Club. A Creta or Grand Vitara is the sweet spot.

2. Dhanbad → Topchanchi Lake (40 km, 75 min)

A man-made lake set between hills, around 25 km past the GT Road. Quieter than Maithon, ideal for an unhurried picnic. The last 8 km is a narrow ghat road — comfortable in any sedan, scenic in an SUV.

3. Dhanbad → Parasnath (Shikharji) (75 km, 2 hr)

One of Jainism's holiest sites — Lord Mahavira and 19 other tirthankaras attained moksha here. The motorable road takes you to Madhuban (the base village). The mountain trek itself is on foot or by palanquin from there. NH 19 + state highway is in good condition. Innova/Scorpio N best for the group sizes pilgrims usually travel in.

Local driving rules and quirks

  • Coal truck movement: Heavy on the Dhanbad–Bokaro corridor between 6 AM–10 AM and 6 PM–10 PM. Avoid these windows for pleasure drives.
  • Maithon parking: ₹50–100 at the boat club. Park on the Jharkhand side — West Bengal-side parking is ₹50 extra.
  • Parasnath shoes-off zones: The base village has marked footwear-removal points. Carry a bag.
  • Fuel: Refill at the IOCL pump near Saraidhela before leaving — most highway pumps on NH 18 are reliable but a few have queuing issues during truck shifts.

Five things first-time renters in Dhanbad ask us

  1. "Can I take the car to Kolkata?" Yes — 270 km on NH 19, about 6 hours. Free inter-state move; we just need a heads-up.
  2. "Is Maithon a one-day trip or overnight?" Comfortable as a day trip if you leave by 8 AM. Overnight only if you want sunrise on the dam.
  3. "What's the smallest car that handles Parasnath ghat?" A Dzire is fine to Madhuban. Don't try to drive up the trekking path — vehicles aren't allowed.
  4. "Can I extend the booking on the road?" Yes, in the app — extension is single-tap. We'll re-quote and confirm in minutes.
  5. "Do you have an unlimited-km plan?" Yes for 3+ day bookings, added at handover. Useful if you're stringing Maithon, Topchanchi and Parasnath in a single trip.
